Electronic Music festivals USA

23. Summerfest

The giants of Ultra Music Festival (UMF), Electric Forest and TomorrowWorld may grab all the headlines (though not always for the right reasons), but the grand old US of A is full of incredible EDM and dance music festivals of all shapes and sizes. Here's a look at 10 that will stand out from the crowd in 2016.

#10 What The Festival

Headliners (2015): Big Gigantic, Odesza, Eats Everything

What The Festival may forever be weighed down by comparisons to the almighty, media-adored Burning Man. A lavishly imaginative arts and music festival should perhaps expect nothing less, but in truth WTF has crafted a creative character all of its own over the last three years. Reasonably low-key lineups help to keep the focus on the extra-curricular, with one of six stages based in the Pacific Northwest's largest wading pool.

When & where: 17 - 20 June 2016, Wolf Run Ranch, Oregon

#9 Desert Hearts

Headliners (2015): M.A.N.D.Y., Audiofly, Blond:ish

"One stage. One vibe. One love." Mikey Lion, co-organiser of Desert Hearts, believes an atmosphere of love and acceptance is the lifeblood of his off-kilter dance music festival. Even the most high-profile artists are regularly seen lapping up the festival experience, rather than hot-footing back to hotels. LA's City Hearts, the urban manifestation of Desert Hearts, has New York and Washington D.C. in its sights.

When & where: TBC (November), Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, California

#8 Movement Electronic Music Festival

Headliners (2015): Ben Klock, Disclosure, Carl Craig

The birthplace of techno will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Movement Electronic Music Festival in 2016, though the festival's roots go all the way back to the turn of the millennium. Detroit Electronic Music Festival ran from 2000-2005, but the city with an electronic soul found a way to keep the party going – even taking it to .

When & where: 28 - 30 May 2016, Detroit, Michigan

#7 Time Warp US

Headliners (2015): Chris Liebing, Joseph Capriati, Ricardo Villalobos

Time Warp has had a tough time locking down venues in New York, both for its debut event in 2014 and for this year's follow-up; but bringing a taste of European underground house and techno to the US has been a stroke of genius. Germany's rave heavyweight brings 20 years of frontline experience across the Atlantic, having already turned the Netherlands' Utrecht and Argentina's Buenos Aires into homes-from-home.

When & where: TBC (November), NYC, New York

#6 TomorrowWorld

Headliners (2015): Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Jamie Jones

TomorrowWorld 2015 ended in controversy after cancelled shuttle buses left thousands of festival-goers stranded on the Saturday night. Anyone who had managed to leave the site could not return the following day, and though the festival organisers refunded Sunday tickets TomorrowWorld still came under heavy criticism.

But the stateside cousin of the biggest dance music festival in the world will certainly live to see better days, and even with a few knocks TomorrowWorld's reputation will surely recover. 2016's edition will attract .

When & where: TBC, Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia

#5 Electric Zoo

Headliners (2015): The Chemical Brothers, Above & Beyond, Alesso

Randall's Island, East Manhattan, parks a full-scale electronic festival right in the heart of New York City. Stadium EDM, proper techno and avant-garde house all stand side-by-side, somehow keeping Electric Zoo an intimate, almost personal affair.
